Building connections is a passion of mine. Whether it's enriching or restoring a marriage, deepening an intimate connection, or growing friendships, I endeavour to help repair relationships and provide a safe place for individuals and couples to explore what they need to create meaning and fulfilment. I believe the root of most emotional disturbances, including depression, anxiety and addiction, is disconnection and broken relationships.

ABOUT ISABEL THORMAN

I am a registered psychotherapist in private practice at Meristem Counselling Services in Oakville, Ontario. I have a Master’s degree in Professional Counselling from Liberty University in Virginia.

I use a client-centred, solution-focused approach, combined with other modalities that aid in personal growth and awareness. Clients are assisted in identifying clear attainable goals for personal change, and empirically validated methods are used to help achieve these goals. I work mostly with adolescents and adults individually, and have unique training and experience in marriage counselling and group therapy.

I am committed to providing evidence-based psychological services – that is therapy that has been shown to be effective in research studies. Much of my work with individuals has been from a cognitive-behavioural perspective (CBT). When I work with couples, I most often draw from both Gottman Method Couples Therapy and Emotionally-Focused Therapy. These complementary methods guide my work to help couples repair and rebuild their relationships.Therapy will reach the heart of the issues and begin the process of restoration.

In addition to my education, I place a great deal of emphasis on staying current, upgrading my skills, through continuing education, teaching and volunteering in the community. These are some of my certifications and ongoing activities that have enhanced both my clinical and personal experience:

  • Choice Theory/Reality Therapy from The Glasser Institute
  • Prepare/Enrich (assessment for pre-marital and married couples)
  • The Depression and Anxiety Recovery Program
  • The Grief Recovery Program
  • Gottman’s Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work
  • The Gottman Method Couples Therapy (Levels 1 & 2)
  • Volunteering with The Lighthouse for Grieving Children and their Families

My training, together with my faith and life experiences, have led me on this journey of developing deep compassion, acceptance and empathy for hurting people, as well as the ability to be present and engaged with my clients.

I have learned that we’re all on a journey and none of us has it all figured out. We are all climbing our own mountains and weathering different storms. And in our unique circumstances, we are the experts of our story. We have the ability to rewrite our narrative, and we are the authors of our own healing and recovery.

My clients inspire me. It is a privilege to work with people who, despite their difficult circumstances, have the courage to seek help and share their struggles.

I would be happy to help you with your challenges too. I take great care in providing a safe, compassionate place to address your concerns, and will work with you to discover a path towards restoration and growth.
