Working With Couples Is My Exclusive Focus

Working with couples is not one part of my practice—it is my entire clinical focus.

Couples typically come to me when they have reached a point where their own attempts to improve the relationship are no longer working. They may love each other deeply and still find themselves repeating the same arguments, becoming increasingly disconnected, struggling with sex or intimacy, dealing with an affair or betrayal, fighting about money, or questioning whether the relationship can continue.

My approach is intentionally active and highly personalized. I do more than listen. I provide direct feedback, identify patterns that may be difficult to see from inside the relationship, teach concrete strategies, and help each partner understand the part they play in the cycle between them.

I work in-person from my private Ridgefield, Connecticut office and offer traditional 60-minute sessions, as well as extended intensives of 2–6 hours when couples need more time and momentum than a traditional session provides.

My areas of specialization include:

• Couples Therapy & Marriage Counseling
• Affair & Betrayal Recovery
• AASECT Certified Sex Therapy for Couples
• Financial Couples Therapy
• Certified Discernment Counseling
• Healing & Therapeutic Separation
• Couples Therapy Intensives
• Non-Adversarial Divorce Support

Couples Therapy & Marriage Counseling

Many couples describe feeling caught in a negative cycle: one partner pursues while the other withdraws; conversations escalate or shut down; the same disagreement resurfaces without resolution; resentment accumulates; and eventually even seemingly small issues become loaded.

The subject may be communication, parenting, sex and intimacy, money, careers, household responsibilities, extended family, trust, or competing visions for the future. The underlying relationship cycle is often what keeps couples stuck.

Our work focuses on identifying and interrupting the patterns keeping you stuck while developing practical relationship skills, including:

• Communicating about difficult subjects more effectively
• Identifying triggers before they take over the conversation
• Learning to self-regulate during conflict
• Listening and responding rather than immediately defending
• Repairing after conflict
• Increasing emotional and physical intimacy
• Developing agreements rather than repeatedly revisiting unresolved issues
• Understanding each partner's contribution to the relationship dynamic
• Rebuilding friendship, partnership and connection
• Making the relationship a priority again

I integrate advanced training in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, the Gottman Method, the Doherty Approach, Discernment Counseling, Sex Therapy and other evidence-informed relationship approaches.

My couples training has included work with internationally recognized leaders in the field, including Dr. Sue Johnson, Drs. John and Julie Gottman, Dr. Bill Doherty and George Faller.

Affair & Betrayal Recovery

An affair or significant betrayal can leave both partners unsure of what is real, what comes next, and whether the relationship can—or should—survive.

Couples often come to me in the aftermath of discovery struggling with shock, grief, anger, intrusive questions, mistrust, shame, and profound uncertainty. The partner who was betrayed may need answers and reassurance while the partner who caused the injury may feel overwhelmed by guilt, defensiveness, or uncertainty about how to begin repairing the damage.

Affair recovery requires more than simply improving communication. I help couples understand what happened, address the injury created by the betrayal, establish meaningful accountability, and determine whether trust and emotional safety can be rebuilt.

When both partners choose to work toward repair, the goal is not to return to the relationship as it was before the betrayal, but to determine whether a more honest, secure, and connected relationship can be built moving forward.

Couples Therapy Intensives

Some couples benefit from having more uninterrupted time than a traditional weekly session allows.

I offer Couples Therapy Intensives ranging from 2–6 hours. Extended sessions can be particularly useful for couples facing significant relationship distress, affair or betrayal recovery, entrenched communication patterns, intimacy concerns, major transitions, or complex decisions about their future.

Rather than repeatedly stopping just as important work begins, an intensive allows us to slow down, understand the pattern more completely and work through important issues with greater continuity.

AASECT Certified Sex Therapy

I am an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist and specialize in helping couples address sexual and intimacy concerns within the context of their relationship.

Sexual difficulties rarely exist in isolation. Attachment, emotional connection, trust, stress, physical health, hormones, medications, life transitions and longstanding relationship patterns can all influence a couple's sexual relationship.

I work carefully and respectfully with concerns including:

• Mismatched sexual desire
• Loss of intimacy or sexual connection
• Orgasm concerns
• Sexual changes associated with perimenopause and menopause
• Sexual changes associated with aging and andropause
• The sexual impact of affairs and betrayal
• Sexual trauma
• Chronic pain and medical conditions
• Medication-related sexual concerns
• Sexuality and gender concerns
• Rebuilding physical and emotional intimacy

AASECT certification requires extensive postgraduate education, clinical experience and specialized supervision beyond the requirements for professional licensure.

Financial Couples Therapy

Money disagreements are rarely just about numbers.

Financial conflict can involve security, freedom, power, fairness, generosity, control, identity, family history and deeply held beliefs about what money means.

I focus on the relational, emotional and behavioral dimensions of money—not financial planning, investing, tax advice or asset management.

I help couples:

• Understand how family-of-origin experiences influence financial beliefs
• Identify the fears underneath recurring money conflicts
• Interrupt negative cycles around spending, saving, earning, debt and giving
• Increase transparency and accountability
• Develop shared financial agreements
• Learn to co-lead financial conversations rather than leaving one partner in the role of “CFO”
• Create a shared vision for how money supports the life they are building together

Certified Discernment Counseling

When one partner is leaning toward ending the marriage and the other wants to preserve it, traditional couples therapy may not be the appropriate first step.

As a Certified Discernment Counselor, I help couples slow the decision-making process and develop greater clarity and confidence about the direction of their relationship.

Discernment Counseling examines three potential paths:

Path One: Maintain the status quo.

Path Two: Move toward separation or divorce.

Path Three: Commit to approximately six months of couples therapy with divorce temporarily off the table and a clear agenda for personal and relational change.

I participate in ongoing advanced training with Dr. Bill Doherty, creator of Discernment Counseling.

Healing/Therapeutic Separation

Sometimes couples need structured time apart without immediately deciding that the marriage is over.

Healing Separation provides a framework for couples to thoughtfully establish expectations, boundaries, communication and goals during a period of separation.

For some couples, separation becomes an opportunity to reduce conflict, work individually and relationally, and ultimately rebuild the relationship. For others, it creates the clarity necessary to move toward ending the marriage in a more thoughtful and non-adversarial manner.

Non-Adversarial Divorce Support

When reconciliation is no longer the direction a couple chooses, I can help couples navigate the emotional and relational aspects of moving toward separation or divorce in a more thoughtful, respectful and non-adversarial way.

My professional development in this area includes ongoing training through the Connecticut Council for Non-Adversarial Divorce as well as completion of mediation and collaborative divorce training.

I do not provide legal or financial advice. When appropriate, this work complements the services of attorneys, mediators and financial professionals.

A Different Kind of Therapy Experience

My practice is intentionally structured around couples.

Because relationship work is my exclusive clinical focus, my office, scheduling and therapeutic approach have been designed around the needs of couples—including those with demanding professional and family lives.

Support does not necessarily end when the session does. Brief between-session text support is available as part of my concierge model, helping couples reinforce important strategies and maintain momentum between appointments.

My style is warm, engaged and direct. Couples can expect compassion, but they can also expect accountability. The objective is not simply to talk about the relationship week after week. It is to understand what keeps the two of you stuck and help you begin doing something meaningfully different.
