Counseling is not easily described in a few statements. It varies, depending on the personalities of the counselor and clients, and the particular problems you are experiencing. My approach begins with respect for you, with building a therapeutic relationship, and with providing a safe place for you to discuss whatever has happened in your life. I work collaboratively with clients to define the problem(s), identify solutions, set goals, and implement an action plan. I desire to understand you and the things that contribute to your distress, to guide you in self-discovery, and to help you build skills that you can use outside of session. As the expert on your experience, you will participate by providing information regarding your experiences and by joining in our exploration. People are complex beings and my approach considers multiple factors involved in all cases - such as your biology, social/cultural context, psychological condition, and the impact of spiritual experience to you.
I have enjoyed 10 years of successful private practice experience, working with individual adults (men and women) and couples on a range of issues such as personal growth and identity, life transitions, burnout, depression/anxiety, grief and loss, any and all marital counseling from pre-engagement or pre-marital, to marital issues, including affair and divorce recovery. As a Certified Sex Therapist I have had extensive training to treat a broad range of sexual functioning issues such as enhancing intimacy, low sexual desire, arousal difficulties, orgasm issues, pain with intercourse, anxiety related to sexuality, and grief and loss - miscarriage, infertility, disability, etc. In addition to private practice I have worked with patients in an inpatient setting, so I understand the experience people may have either coming from or needing to go to inpatient treatment and can walk with them through that experience. I believe I am also a great team player, humble enough to know that sometimes treatment requires referrals to other professionals, such as doctors, physical therapists, or other specialists such as CSAT (Certified Sex Addiction Therapists) for those struggling with sexual addiction. I have been part of co-leading a women's Partners of Sex Addicts group where I help wives recover from the trauma of sexual betrayal.
My graduate work was completed at University of North Texas (Denton) (2007) and my post graduate work in sex therapy was completed at Richmont Graduate University (Atlanta, GA) (2009) in conjunction with Institute for Sexual Wholeness. The post graduate course work completed is the equivalent of another half of a Masters degree in sexuality. Upon completion of my studies in Atlanta, I have met all the requirements to certify as a CST (Certified Sex Therapist). All this was accomplished in a mid life transition (2nd career). Thus I bring a lot of life experience and my own hard work of personal growth to the table as well as professional education, training, and licensure.
As a Licensed Professional Counselor, my goal is to help people fine HOPE, HEALING, and JOY so that they may experience more fulfilling lives and take delight in more satisfying relationships.
