Depression and anxiety are common mood instability problems rooted in childhood issues. If we feel secure and our feelings are taken into account by our parents, we grow up having a ballast that rights our boat when we encounter the storms of life. But many children were ignored by busy parents or parents filled with their own strife and did not receive the love that was necessary to feel that "tomorrow will be a brighter day." Because of these problems, our moods fluctuate and now our adulthood is diminished. Feeling depressed from time to time is part of the human experience. However, medical depression which is chronic and/or acute can be debilitating and painful. Depression is a complex issue with no one clear contributing factor. As a therapist, I work with individuals to determine what factors contribute to each individual’s feelings of depression. I then help clients identify existing strengths and skills they can use to increase a sense of well-being. In addition, I teach new skills to further empower individuals in managing their mood.

Depression affects many individuals, and often, individuals are not aware that depression is causing them to feel bad and they may struggle to understand what is happening to cause them to feel sad, to not want to get out of bed, to lose interests in things they once enjoyed, or to withdraw from family and friends and the people they love the most. For some, thoughts of harming themselves or even ending their life seems like the only solutions to the misery and agony they experience. I will help individuals learn to recognize and understand symptoms of depression and how to better manage their mood by learning to identify stressors and triggers and then learning to apply Cognitive and Dialectical Behavioral strategies to help alleviate depression.
