Psychotherapy is based on the idea that we repress events and thoughts in our lives which make us unhappy or uncomfortable and that these repressions poison our behavior. Talking, going back and airing these repressions, therefore, renders them harmless. If this were true, then therapists would have the happiest lives, lowest divorce rates, and most well adjusted children. They don't! I do not believe this works and do not do it. I also do not label my clients with codes or numbers--surely a dehumanizing act which makes therapy more difficult.
