There's an old saying: "If you can't talk about it, you can't work it out." I agree. This is where psychotherapy can help. If you choose to work with me, we will work together to help you learn how to express yourself in ways that help you to identify your needs and how to get your needs met. This isn't always so easy, in particular if we are feeling guilt, anxiety, or shame. Many people simply aren't used to talking about some of the challenges of their lives. Perhaps this speaks to you. I understand. That was me at one time. What I can tell you is this: for over 25 years my clients typically report feeling better because they feel heard, understood, and truly cared for.

Psychotherapy is based on the idea that we repress events and thoughts in our lives which make us unhappy or uncomfortable and that these repressions poison our behavior. Talking, going back and airing these repressions, therefore, renders them harmless. If this were true, then therapists would have the happiest lives, lowest divorce rates, and most well adjusted children. They don't! I do not believe this works and do not do it. I also do not label my clients with codes or numbers--surely a dehumanizing act which makes therapy more difficult.

I enjoy teaching couples and individuals about healthy ways to treat themselves so that they will learn to enjoy life to its fullness. It all starts in the mind. Psychotherapy involves talking out your problems to a professional, and speaking with a licensed counselor may help you overcome the obstacles that we face daily, as well as the emotional or psychological issues that may stand in our way.

My approach to psychotherapy is to give that individual choice and control back in their life. I utilize deferent approaches and educate you on each as we go through this. I partner with you in this journey. I believe that you are in need of healing and not something that need to be fixed. One of my main approaches is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I use this to restructure and identify thoughts and create a new way of thinking in the areas of need.

As a trained psychotherapist and counselor, my aim is to help my clients challenge and rewrite the negative automatic thoughts and negative core beliefs that they hold of themselves. Beliefs such as "I am not worthwhile" or "I am stupid" or "I am too much or not enough" were often learned in childhood. Many clients find relief from cognitive behavioral therapy which helps them examine and change negative behaviors, thoughts and emotions which lead to anxiety and depression and a host of other mental health problems. Clients also benefit from EMDR, an evidence based psychotherapy which has proven to be effective in helping those struggling with distressing negative memories and PTSD.

Psychotherapy is a process towards growth and change. I use several techniques to help my clients recognize what is happening inside of them, where it is stemming from, and find a new way of being in the world and with themselves. This process involves having new experiences which lead to exploration within a safe relationship. I believe that the relationship between the client and the therapist is as important as working on the problem. I help my clients develop skills to relate with themselves and others in a different, compassionate, and kind way.

Psychotherapy, or "talk therapy," is a psychosocial form of mental health treatment used to treat a variety of mental health disorders and concerns. Whether on an individual, family, or group level the primary aim of psychotherapy is to assist individuals with developing increased insight into their experiences and to encourage behavior change in an effort to resolve psychological, emotional, and behavioral difficulties and promote growth. Some forms of psychotherapy focus on thoughts, thoughts processes and beliefs, others focus more so on emotional responses and interpretation of experiences (e.g., the meaning), while others are most concerned with observable behavior.

Psychotherapy, the process of exploring, understanding and finding solutions for personal and situational challenges, is often very helpful for people facing a range of issues. In fact, psychotherapy has been shown to have similar effects on the brain as taking commonly prescribed medications for depression and anxiety! I have 14 years of clinical experience and have helped many adults and adolescents to work find relief from distress, deeper self-awareness and greater satisfaction in life. I strive to create a supportive and comfortable atmosphere within which people can explore sometimes difficult topics and find their way towards greater overall wellness.

Often individual psychotherapy can be helpful for those who are motivated to change personal outlook and behavior. Many individuals come to the conclusion that something in their life needs to change whether it is a relationship pattern, an inability to achieve career goals, or to come to terms with some life circumstance or history. An outside perspective can provide new insight as well as objective feedback and new avenues of consideration. Friends and Family members often are too close to see these issues, too afraid of jeopardizing their relationship with you, or struggling with their own life dilemmas. Most people who ask, 'could I benefit from counseling?' are voicing a need.
