Vacaville, California is conveniently located halfway between San Francisco and Sacramento, in Solano County. The city is home to over 92,000 people. William McDaniel, who purchased land from the Mexican land grant Rancho Los Putos, originally founded the city in 1851. The city was a critical stop on the Pony Express, and throughout the 1800s flourished as a great agricultural area because of its excellent soil. The city experiences hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters, which is typical of a Mediterranean climate.1

Mental Health in Vacaville

Many Californians, regardless of their insurance status, do not pursue mental health care when they need it. In fact, more than half of those who should pursue treatment go without, and another 23 percent get only minimally adequate services. Without seeking help, Vacaville residents who live with a mental illness have reduced social, emotional, and economic functioning, which further compounds their life difficulties.2

Opportunity House is a Vacaville-based non-profit organization that strives to meet the various needs of the city's homeless population. Improving the mental health of all residents of Vacaville and the surrounding communities is a top priority of the Solano County Government. As part of the county's prevention and early intervention plan, a number of initiatives have been implemented. The Early Childhood Mental Health Program provides services that allow parents and school personnel to identify children who have special needs. Programs for transitional age youth are available as well. Also part of the intervention services are those to address suicide and mental illness stigmas.4
