My specialty in a world of addictions is a sexual addiction. In 2006 – 2009 I conducted research on cybersex addiction that was later published as a student book. I apply Dr. Patrick Carnes approach to a treatment and recovery from sexual addiction. I guide clients to understand the anatomy of their addiction and through stages of recovery. When working with addictions, it is vital to meet people where they are at in their treatment. To be “REAL” is the path to success. Ambivalence must be examined and dealt with. Mapping the person priorities in life will shine a light on and highlight what really is important to the individual. Recognizing stimulus and avoiding them are also effective techniques. Measuring success daily and unpacking events can alleviate some of the internal struggles of addictions. In working with addictions it is important to remember the mind is actually being highjack by the substance.
