I have considerable experience in family therapy with families dealing with divorce or instability in home life, physical or mental abuse issues, addiction and its impacts, physical or mental illnesses in the family, and school performance, attendance, or discipline issues. I have worked with families to help create discipline strategies and coping mechanisms for children who are defiant or resistant to parental discipline.

Families are complex systems! When your children are young or teenagers, counseling can help parents to navigate the different stages that children encounter. Family patterns of addictions, abuse, or codependency that have been passed through generations tend to generate chaos in families and at some point need to be addressed and shifted. Counseling can be very helpful in identifying these patterns, healing the wounds they have caused, and putting new ways of being into place. Family counseling can also be helpful for adult children to open dialogue with their parents, siblings, or in-laws. I serve many roles with families: mediator, navigator, translator, and supporter.

Given the wide variety of family issues I have encountered over the years, I have adopted an integrated therapeutic approach. Hence, clients will receive general psychoeducation in a number of areas including: values discovery, parenting, interpersonal communication, conflict resolution, boundary setting, sibling rivalry, mutual respect and accountability to mention a view. As your "group therapy leader," session time will be effectively managed. Role-plays will be utilized extensively to allow for relative freedom of expression. In addition, homework assignments are a prominent and prevalent component to our intervention strategy. Finally, priority is given to confidentiality and trust.

Most family therapists inadvertently create more chaos through their well-intentioned efforts to assist a family move through a change process. Why? Brains are inherently dysregulated (all of us, may I add) and most talking and dialoguing misses brain-centric problems that need more intensive help. Jennifer encourages families to bring all family members to therapy sessions. It is helpful to meet all members and hear each person's input on what the problem(s) may be from their individual perspective. Even young children have thoughts on how the family can be better. Jennifer is open to seeing family members on an individual basis in order to facilitate the freedom to speak honestly about how they are feeling.

Family therapy is an area that I am passionate about. I feel that most of our issues can find its root in our family of origin. Everyone wants to be heard, and everyone wants to be valued.
