We at Ashburn Psychological Services are here to help.

Several of our counselors are Christian. Our job is not to talk about our faith, but to help you figure out the role it plays in your life. We can incorporate spirituality as much or as little as you like in your sessions. Finding purpose and meaning helps many manage their mental health. When we struggle emotionally, people often lose their faith. believing in something bigger than yourself can be hopeful.

My background in Christian studies spans almost 18 years including college studies that required understanding of multiple Christian religions. In understanding Biblical fundamentals on how to relate to religion, relationships, and the management of self I am able to understand and discuss the challenges that society today places on the life of a practicing Christian.

I spent three years in seminary, one at the undergraduate level and two at the graduate level. The latter two years were spent in Rome, Italy studying at the Gregorian University, a Jesuit institution. In my practice I welcome my clients to share their spiritual concerns (or not, as they please) as we collaborate to reaching measurable wellness goals. I welcome clients of all spiritual perspectives and persuasions to engage in these reflections.

There are many benefits to seeing a Christian Counselor. Christians have found that Christian counseling is more consistent with their beliefs than secular counseling. Working with a Christian Counselor, there is no need to explain the nuances of your faith. A Christian counselor understands the power of prayer and the active presence of the Holy Spirit. Christian counseling ministers to the whole person, spirit, soul, and body.

Faith does not shield us from life’s challenges. Even as Christians, we may face seasons of emotional struggle, illness, grief, or relationship pain. My goal in Christian counseling is to walk with you through these difficulties in a way that strengthens your faith and reminds you of the hope and purpose God has for your life. While following Christ in today’s world can feel overwhelming at times, I believe that God always provides a path forward. Together, we can seek healing, peace, and restoration through both sound therapeutic practice and the sustaining truth of God’s Word.

Whether you are seeking to deepen your spiritual connection, explore new ways to live in alignment with your beliefs, or transition away from an inherited faith tradition -- our conversations will help you continue along the journey of your faith. I blend western and eastern religious theory and am comfortable with agnosticism. I often use out-of-session readings and 'homework' assignments to encourage private reflection and practice of the insights gained in therapy.

Change is hard. Our brokenness runs deeper in us than we wish, but so does our capacity for growth and change. My Christian perspective gives me a helpful frame for grappling with and understanding this tension: It gives me great compassion for how challenging it can be (due to our brokenness) to grow and change, and it also gives me great hope for each person's innate ability to change (because of God's protecting within us the capacity for healing). I would be honored to help you deepen your faith as you wrestle with God, your brokenness and your untapped capacity for change. And in so doing help you to become more whole, more free, more the person God created you to be.

Faith is such a huge part of a person and often times people feel like they are asked to divorce their spiritual health from their mental health. From my perspective this is not possible. While I am not here to replace your form of spiritual guidance, I am here to help you integrate your faith into who you are as a person. Whether it is addressing trauma's experienced as a result of people from our faith, or finding ways to more fully embrace our faith for healing, I am here to help you see how fulfilling faith can be when we allow all parts of ourselves to interact with it.

As Christians, we are not immune to human pain and suffering. We read that “it was for freedom that Christ set us free” (Galatians 5:1, NASB), but sometimes we feel like slaves of anxiety, depression, relationship problems, or something else.
