Family systems therapy draws on systems thinking in its view of the family as an emotional unit. When systems thinking—which evaluates the parts of a system in relation to the whole—is applied to families, it suggests behavior is both often informed by and inseparable from the functioning of one’s family of origin. I have 5 years of experience in using family therapy with children, teenagers, and parents. I believe that tremendous growth and insight can take place in a family counseling session. Each family has a history of the rules that govern interaction within a family. These rules may be known to at least some degree but may not be spoken about. Rules include what are the consequences that occur if those rules are broken. Rules are often passed down from one generation to the next and conflict can occur when two people come together in forming their own family. A conflict can also occur in a blended family because of remarriage or the formation of new family unit. Therapy involves understanding how those rules came about and then addressing how those rules work or do not work within the current family unit and making decisions about how to better interact together.

A family is a unique social environment, made up of the beliefs, personalities and values of it's members. Changes in one family member can affect everyone else in the group.
