Familes create complicated systems and part of my work is to identify the systems that are in place. Families can be extremely frustrating. No one knows better than our family how to push our buttons. Fights tend to go the same way every time. I work with families to discover their underlying patterns and work to change those patterns to lead different outcomes. The family therapy process can be chaotic, but my approach leads to peace at the end of the chaos.

Most family therapists inadvertently create more chaos through their well-intentioned efforts to assist a family move through a change process. Why? Brains are inherently deregulated (all of us, may I add) and most talking and dialoguing misses brain-centric problems that need more intensive help. Working with teens and families is one of my favorite aspects of my practice. Learning about each individual family's culture--the unspoken rules, the traditional ways of communicating and setting boundaries, is the first step to bringing about the changes that many families long for: increased intimacy, improved communication, safety, trust, belonging.
