Family therapy differs from individual therapy by focusing on how the relationship dynamics are affecting the overall psychological health of family members and the functioning of the family as a whole. Often, one family member is "scapegoated" as the "identified patient," when there are a host of issues that need to be addressed. Boundaries need to be defined in a healthier way, and often the parents need to reexamine their parenting style for better results. Having an objective observer and family coach can be a real asset.
