Family therapy is very important in terms of appreciating those with whom we share life, forgiving, communicating assertively and compassionately, setting appropriate boundaries, resolving conflicts, creating positive patterns and life experiences, and removing obstacles to growth and development. Through systemic family therapy, we understand generational patterns, inherited characteristics and tendencies, what symptoms may have gained for us in the past, and what we can do to have satisfying lives without dysfunctional symptoms. New healthy coping mechanisms help all family members to create positive patterns for life and satisfying relationships in the present and future.

I address Family Therapy a little differently than a lot of counselors. Since I believe that a family is a "system" I encourage family members to explore the differences in their roles in the system, and how those roles have changed prior to and after the problems and issues have surfaced. I then go about teaching techniques of open communication, which over time, will hopefully reestablish proactive roles.

Family therapy looks at the entire family system—parents, children, extended family members—to identify strengths and problematic behaviours. I collaborate with families on strategies for utilizing their own capabilities for resolving problems, and on developing effective communication and problem-solving skills for preventing conflicts. I specialize in working with families of teenagers, which is an age that can be challenging for both the teenagers and their parents.
