Family Therapy is done from a holistic systems perspective. We examine the challenges you experience as a family, the dynamics of communication, the age of the children involved, and the relationship issues between the members in the family unit. This requires everyone to be open, honest, and reflective, and to be willing to try new ideas. Supportive resources are also provided to enhance the counseling work done in this practice.

We often have families with unique needs and wants that take a slightly different approach. Family dynamics have many moving parts and sometimes meeting with 1, 2, or all family members is required to understand the parts and the challenges. A systems approach is pulling together the many parts, assessing and evaluating, and moving forward with a plan for individuals and the system itself. Blended family dynamics, divorce, abuse, and various other family challenges are common with some of our clientele.

Family Therapy can be one of the most dynamic ways to engage healing - sometimes in unexpected ways. In Family Therapy, each member of the family has the opportunity to learn about the (usually unspoken) rules governing how the family operates, and specifically how they have fit into, or chafed against the family rules and systems. In some cases, the family will encounter how a family member has been identified as the main problem. They will also learn how their relationships within the family are connected to what has been covertly and overtly passed on from generations before them.

When one person in a family makes a change or has a problem, there is a ripple effect--sometimes that's for the better and sometimes 'not so much'! I pay attention to the hierarchies and help parents take on the roles that work best when raising children. This is particularly important in blended family situations. Sometimes its important to have a counseling session with all the family members and other times with just the parents.

Systems Therapy techniques are often used to work with families. Families present unique issues in therapy. Often different family members are in a role that supports the family to stay in the situation they find themselves in and therefore it is difficult for families to change difficult interactions without professional help. Identifying these roles and helping individual family members move out of those roles helps the family make progress and resolve issues that have brought them into therapy.

Relationships are some of the most shaping aspects of a person's world. Family therapy considers improving people's relationships as the most way to improve their lives. Whether it is better communication with a partner, warmer interactions between a parent and child, confronting a caretaker about abuse or neglect, or finding forgiveness for hurting someone you love, family therapy uses a system's approach to shape your relationships into what you want them to be.

Most family therapists inadvertently create more chaos through their well-intentioned efforts to assist a family move through a change process. Why? Brains are inherently deregulated (all of us, may I add) and most talking and dialoguing misses brain-centric problems that need more intensive help. Many times the emotional trauma created by years of solving problems ineffectively can wreak havoc on the brain's parasympathetic nervous system, not ever giving the family a break from flight or fight thinking. Virginia Satir, an early pioneer of family therapy, said, “Feelings of worth can flourish only in an atmosphere where individual differences are appreciated, mistakes are tolerated, communication is open, and rules are flexible – the kind of atmosphere that is found in a nurturing family.” My approach in working with families honors her idea that everyone in the family has an incredible worth and something to contribute. I strive in family therapy to increase the connectedness and trust between partners, siblings and parents and their children so that the family becomes a place all members thrive.

Often there are times when our very family seems to be falling apart. It can feel hopeless and it can be easy to pin the blame on one or two people in a family. In my work with families, I seek to explore each members' unique voice and contribution to the struggles that our occurring. I find that when this is engaged and in an honest and open way, the issues are able to be addressed and worked through for the benefit of all. However, it often requires a therapist who can see from another perspective to help a family move together in a different direction together.

Families operate as a system, where what each person does affects the others and the family dynamics as a whole. My goal in Family Therapy is to help each person within the family to have a voice and to know their value and also reflect on how they impact the family as a whole. We often take certain roles in our family and operate under these roles out of habit. It is important to examine what role we have taken up and whether that fits with who we are and who we want to be. There is room for everyone to have autonomy in a family and still be a part of the system.

Family therapy looks at the entire family system—parents, children, extended family members—to identify strengths and problematic behaviours. I collaborate with families on strategies for utilizing their own capabilities for resolving problems, and on developing effective communication and problem-solving skills for preventing conflicts. I specialize in working with families of teenagers, which is an age that can be challenging for both the teenagers and their parents.

However we will discuss family dynamics and family or origin issues in the course of our work together. As we identify family issues we may at times role-play to give you the practice of representing yourself differently with your family. I see the role of your family of origin to be vital in understanding you as a client and the way in which you relate to others. As people we are molded from our relationships and our family is our first and most foundational relationship in our lives. Naturally we take on patterns of our family subconsciously. Family dynamics are complicated. When problems arise in families, it is often very difficult for those who are deeply, personally involved in the situation to be able to see or understand the underlying causes and solutions to these difficulties. Family therapy is a very beneficial way for you and your family to be able to address their concerns in a safe atmosphere. Having a professional who is trained and has experience in conflict resolution and increasing communication can be effective in helping your family move forward towards recovery and harmony in a way that is often simply not possible on your own. Please feel free to contact me to see if family therapy is right for your family.
