Port Moody is known for it’s shipyards along the Fraser River.  Premier McBride purchased two submarines from a Seattle shipyard contractor which were originally destined for the Chili. At that time a shipyard on Burrard Inlet six submarines were constructed for the Royal Russian Navy under a top secret agreement.  All the employees wee sworn to secrecy and the activity was guarded by the Canadian Army.  Marriage counselling Port Moody is a dual-therapy that includes both husband and wife for the restoration of their relationship.  After completion, the submarines were dismantled and shipped in crates to Russia, in the North Pacific.  A foreman from the construction crew left with the cargo intending to supervise the assembly but in 1917 the Russian revolution broke out and he was jailed for several months before the Canadian government arranged his release. The only trace of this secret activity is a map showing Submarine Creek leading to Burrard Inlet from the construction site. 

 

The Port Moody Station Museum and Arts Centre is located at the corner of Murray and Moody Streets and was constructed by the Canadian Pacific Railway Company.  The history of the area is captured by numerous neighborhoods with character buildings and homes. Many celebrations are available for residents and visitors hosted by volunteers; from Mother’s Day to the Festive Season teas in the ‘1921 Railcar, the Venosta’.  Century old toys are displayed during the holidays while hot apple cider is served to guests.  Christian counselling in Port Moody is available for those wanting a spiritual therapy. The CPR  holiday train pays annual visits at which time entertainment is provided.  A fundraiser for those less fortunate as well as donations for local foods banks is held frequently.  There are signs of times past when wood, coal and oil stoves provided heat and warmth.  Donations are gratefully accepted and Gift Memberships can be purchased.  Jim Millar is the curator and a treasure with his enthusiasm and ability about the history and music of the times past.
