San Diego is a coastal city located in the southernmost part of California, bordering Mexico. San Diego is known for its zoo and marine park where visitors can enjoy learning about exotic animals and marine life.1 Visitors can even get in the water and play with dolphins or beluga whales for one of the most unique experiences of a lifetime. Located on the Pacific Ocean, San Diego has a unique climate nestled within valleys and canyons creating a semi-arid climate and is a major tourist destination for visitors worldwide. The University of California, San Diego is a large contributor to the education of the local residents, and is also a large contributor to the economy through research in the biotechnology field. With this being the second largest industry in San Diego, many companies have located their offices and research centers here to make use of the many trained and skilled students that come out of the University. Marriage and Couples Mental Health in San Diego

San Diego is a family oriented community. Of the 1.1 million households in San Diego County, over 50 percent are husband-wife families. San Diego's median annual income of $63,373 is slightly higher than the average for California cities.2 Great diversity among the city's residents in terms of ethnicity, race, and cultural heritage makes it a great place to learn about others. San Diego families face many mental health related problems, however.

Methamphetamine, heroin, and marijuana use in San Diego is higher than the national and California average. In 2008, there were over 13,000 substance abuse treatment admissions in San Diego, more than half of which involved racial and ethnic minorities.3 Mental health workers who wish to help San Diego residents overcome drug addiction can become a Certified Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor by completing coursework at the University of California at San Diego. The program involves classes in recovery, psychopharmacology, counseling, and group leadership. There is also a 225-hour practicum component. For additional information about the program and the state requirements for certification, please call 858-534-9262.4
