Corona publishes a calendar of events on their city's website.1 This is helpful for both residents and visitors.  There are several different community events such as “Corona’s Got Talent” and some theatre performance.  The city also takes steps to recognize those who help out in the community through a volunteer recognition program, called the “Extraordinary Volunteers” Awards program.  The extraordinary volunteers are nominated by whoever wants to nominate the volunteer.  There is certain criterion that must be met in order for them to be eligible.  There is also a “Celebrate Youth” program that was created in order to recognize the youth in the community, from 6th – 12th grade who have demonstrated a commitment to community involvement including personal achievement.

Corona Parks and Community Services host a Tiny Tot Olympics for youth from two and one-half years old to six years old.  There are different activities for the children and for a small registration fee they will also receive a t-shirt of the event.  To continue with the family-oriented events in Corona, the city also hosts a “Day of the Child” event that is filled with festival features activities, food, and entertainment.  The purpose is to teach families about the 3R’s—Recycle, Reuse, and Renew.  Additionally, there is an Earth Day Celebration that educates the community on how to create a more sustainable environment and is hosted by the Green Institute for Village Empowerment.

Mental Health in Corona

As in all communities, Corona, California has some problems. With a population of close to 160,000 there are sure to be lots of problems that will arise.2 In general, this city is relatively small with many people living close together. Drug abuse and depression are major problems in the area, and about one in every four people has a college degree of some kind. Lack of further education, traumatic events, past experiences, drug problems, and addiction are all things that will eventually lead to a community that is filled with mental health problems and generally unhappy people. It makes a city less desirable, and it wont be a place that anyone wants to live once the mental health risks become dominant. With the economy getting worse and fewer jobs available, these problems are abound to continue building.

Mental health is a serious problem, and health problems and illnesses in the mind typically begin at young ages and are obvious among schools and young students. For Corona, this is a very good signout of local schools, it is ranked the safest and has the least number of suspensions.3 Drug problems are limited to certain places in town and are not evident among children. This is a sign that the situation is improving and will be better with the right kind of help.

Current Education

The local schools have all been making an effort to improve safety for the children who attend there, as well as in the surrounding neighborhoods.4 With tightened security, it is harder for children to get their hands on drugs or weapons, and fights are very rare. When you help the community on a local level, mental health improves overall. However, if you are in need of assistance or counseling for any child adult, or family member you can contact their mental health treatment center at 951-273-0608 and there are many more resources available.5
