My experience includes family support, mental health, & bereavement issues. I was also trained as a life skills coach - relevant to attending to feelings such as anger, handling stress – fitting addictions treatment. I also have a strong background in social work as well as counselling skills & I have worked with psycho-educational groups, goal-oriented and narrative approaches as well as systems theory. My counselling style embraces creativity and integrative approaches & creative expression - art therapy, in particular, with its use of symbolic language - gives opportunity for indirect narratives is very apt for helping people through difficult transitions and with addictions.

Amy Mackenzie's approach to Art Therapy for addiction involves two phases. If an individual is currently using the substance or engaging in the compulsive behaviour, Amy will support the client through a motivational, decision-making process around giving up the substance/behaviour involving pros and cons collages and illustrating various factors in this decision. Art therapy tools will be given to the client to help them through the week with handling triggers and coping with cravings and powerful emotions and sensations, resulting from withdrawal. After this phase, Amy will guide the client in emotional expression and exploration of past events or dynamics that led to the addiction.

Substance use and problematic behaviours can quickly spiral out of our control. Regardless of whether we identify with the label of addict, many people can recognize that they need assistance. My approach to addictions is focused on empowering you to overcome and manage these behaviours in a non-pathologising and non-stigmatising atmosphere. You can regain control over your substance use.

Addictions and all compulsive behaviours can take over our lives and waste our money, damage our relationships and wreck our health and maybe even get us in jail. There are many kinds of addictions, gambling, substance, sexual, some phobias, porn, internet, cutting and many more. Specialized addictions counseling or medical care is advised when appropriate. Supportive, non judgemental, compassionate counseling with Dr. Graham will help you get insight into why you turn to harmful addictive habits. You will learn to identify the needs you are trying to meet and learn ways to resolve these needs with more healthy behaviours. Twelve step programs and other support groups may be discussed.

I am an addiction specialist with over 20 years of addiction therapy experience and a PhD in addiction psychology. I use the bio-psycho-social-spiritual model and a holistic approach (in layman's terms - I work with each person as a unique individual). Some people benefit from 12 step approaches, other's do not. I have a wide range of tools in my tool box that help me to fine tune the treatment to the person - not the other way around.
Recent brain imaging studies have convinced me that addiction is in the brain, not the bottle - and so I work extensively with people who have "process addictions" where gambling, sex, porn, internet, shopping, spending, and or gaming, are a problem.
