Grey Matters International and the work of Kevin J. Fleming, Ph.D approaches issues of anger management in a very humane yet fresh perspective. You see, anger is a normal emotion but it is the valence (intensity) as well as the coupling choice of what one does with this that is the problem. Telling someone to "not" do it or modifying behavior with a trite psychological plan that only breeds a compliant response is not the way to change anger. Brainwave optimization is a new cutting edge technology that allows one to rewire circuitry responsible for reactivity driving the anger. While anger is a healthy emotion, it can be unleashed in a very unhealthy manner. Learning tools for effective expression and communication can allow your anger to be heard and understood. Without good communication skills and methods of coping, it often feels as though one is up a creek without a paddle. Good intentions can be hijacked. I will increase your awareness and understanding of the triggers and physical cues that are fueling your anger thus allowing you to make different choices. Together, we will uncover distorted patterns of thinking and reacting, learn new techniques of responding and restore your confidence and personal dignity.

Anger work is a psychological tool which is used to heal from past and present emotional pains. The basic premise of Anger Work is to let go of emotionally painful events by focusing on them and expressing anger about the pain. By focusing on the trauma over and over, the pain will gradually go away, never to affect you again. (Specific, hands-on techniques are discussed later in this article) A comparison can be made between our physical health and our emotional health. When the body experiences a severe laceration or other injury, if the wound is left unattended it will get infected. Eventually, it will fester and may even turn into gangrene, a life threatening condition. If, however, the wo....

Before I got into private practice, I worked with many non-profit organizations that serviced teens with behavioral problems. The majority of them had anger management issues. In order to be successful with them, I had first form a positive trusting relationship with them. Secondly, I had to do reality testing with them as to what the consequences of their "blowing Up" behavior could potentially cost them. Or had cost them. Thirdly I had to teach them how to be assertive without being aggressive. Taking emotion out of a conversation.

Anger is only the "tip of the iceburg." Talking with a professional therapist will help give you insight into what is really at the core of your anger. Many do not realize that anger is actually a "mask" for many other emotions. Anger can also be "stored up" through a person's lifetime. Once you admit you are angry, then the journey begins to find out what, why, who and how. Becoming aware of the life events either in your past, or currently that you might be struggling with is the beginning of emotional freedom. We are not meant to spend our lives angry. Discovering more about yourself, your emotions, and anger will be the beginning of a journey of freedom from emotional bondage.

Activating the fight-flight system is the single most challenging factor in managing anger, stress, & interpersonal conflict. When anger stems from childhood trauma, EMDR may be useful. When it originates from an over-active limbic system (e.g, in ADD), neurofeedback and/or medication may be indicated. Regardless of the source, some crucial elements are: learning an effective relaxation/self-soothing method, knowing how to check one's pulse so that time-out can be taken to use the self-soothing tools to calm down when elevating (rather than after full escalation), and employing a cardio exercise program. A good Mindfulness practice can be beneficial as well for those who are so inclined.

Anger is tragic way to get what you really want. Underneath anger there is a true need. The angry person hopes the other person will be intimidated and give what is wanted. While intimidation may get the other person to comply, it is seldom from the heart. I would like to guide you to find out what you deeply want and to be able to express that need vulnerability. Why? Because that's what people respond to. With your being open and vulnerable, you give others the CHOICE of whether or not they will respond. AND... your chances go way up that they will respond when you show them your heart.
