Managing anger can be challenging. How we cope with and express anger is often learned in our families and communities. Unhealthy patterns may be unintentionally passed on by generations. Breaking this cycle involves identifying unhealthy or inappropriate behaviors related to anger. Healthy ways of coping and expressing anger are then introduced within the counseling setting. Clients may be asked to participate in homework assignments, reading, or role play challenging situations. Workbooks and cognitive behavioral worksheets may be provided. Ultimately clients will learn that anger is an emotion that can be healthy when expressed and managed appropriately.

I am not a specialist in anger management, anger is very much pert of our emotional repertoire . Many of my clients have anger management issues that are often hidden, even from themselves because the acting out of a rage is so terrifying and such a cultural taboo. Often personal complexes are at the bottom of explosive anger - while righteous anger can be very helpful in emotional repertoire, acting out is not - and there are ways we can manage this potentially helpful energy.

Anger is a perfectly normal and even healthy emotion. When we lose control of our anger is when it becomes problematic. Out of control anger can quickly lead to trouble in our personal and professional lives and even lead to legal problems. Understanding where your anger is coming from and how to effectively deal with it is important for people who consider themselves "hot headed". I would like to help you through the process of discovering the roots of your anger and finding the tools that will be helpful in dealing with anger on a daily basis.

I believe anger is a natural emotion. Very natural. However, my counseling experience has shown me that often at a deeper level of anger is sadness (hurt) or fear. Anger seems to just be a symptom. When clients experience anger, I want them to go deeper and try and understand what else are they really feeling. Are they afraid of rejection? Are they afraid of being alone? Are they sad? Are they hurt that someone was selfish or mean? I believe as a culture we do a very poor job teaching our children how to deal with their anger. Often children are shamed for expressing anger, because they have not been taught how to express it in a healthy way. They are healthy ways to express anger.

Anger work is, at a much deeper level, the healing work of loss, blocked goals, unjust treatment, unhealed pain, or other deeper issues. For people of faith, God's Word is clear, "Be angry, and do not sin it it." The FEELING of ANGER is not a sin. Many of my clients receive immediate relief and freedom when this truth is applied to their lives. I encourage my clients to allow the feelings to emerge, be honest about the roots of pain, and uncover the either overt style of expressing anger OR the covert (more Southern) style of Passive-Aggressive anger so that a life of peace may be achieved. Peace is possible. Peace is powerful. Grace for all who feel angry. Peace is on the way!
