In her work with young children Khara utilizes her 4.5lb trained therapy dog, named Tino. When children don't want to come to therapy, they often want to go to see Tino. This helps children feel more comfortable faster than would be possible without Tino's help. This allows Khara to "jump right in" to why your child is coming to therapy. Khara uses Tino to teach children important skills like listening, following directions, and most important, setting healthy boundaries.

I love working with children from 2 years of age. I have worked with children for over 20 years and have worked with many children who are twice-gifted as well as special needs. I specialize in working with children who have experienced physical and sexual abuse as well as those that are working through life transitions and divorce. I use the expressive arts and play with my child clients.

I work with tweens and teens, 10 and up. I typically utilize Narrative Therapy , Expressive Arts, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and Strengths-Based approaches when it comes to minors. Tweens and teens are brilliant and have extraordinary outlooks when interacting with the world around them. Given these qualities, the world can be overwhelming in ways that adults do not have to experience anymore or as often as they used to. This is why I take careful time to build rapport with these clients before diving into heavy therapeutic work. Children need to feel like they have a voice within the therapeutic space in order to communicate and express themselves authentically.

Although it’s a hard pill to swallow, I’ve found that young children often display anxiety, disobedience, and other problem-behaviors because they are absorbing chaos within the home... often because the parents haven’t dealt with their own issues. This isn’t a judgment. Parenting is tough. But if you’re looking for someone to “fix” your kid, I’m not your guy.
