Many children and teens have anger issues but the question is where does the anger come from? I include the parents on the interview process as well as hear the child/teens thoughts about anger. Together we will come up with a plan that not only works in my office but also at school and home . I believe working with families is the key component to helping control anger. In addition, I will provide the child/teen with calming strategies and help them be mindful of their behavior as well as teach them the warning signs our bodies give off during the times of anger and/or stressful situations. While anger management can provide helpful strategies, they don’t get to the heart of the issue. Often, anger is what we see on the surface, but the real problem is what’s underneath the anger. Negative beliefs like “I’m helpless,” “I’m out of control,” and “I’m a failure,” start to bubble up, and anger comes to the rescue. It can get us in trouble, but at least it gets the blood pumping.
