Understanding anger is crucial to being able to control it, redirect and sometimes honor it. We live in a society in which it is far more acceptable to express anger than it is to express feelings of loneliness and self-doubt. I find that anger is usually a response to a deeper emotional experience that we do not fully understand. The goal of this type of work is help clients to identify primary emotions, understand their function and express them in a more healthy way. DBT is a great way to help clients understand how to regulate emotions and develop a more mindful relationship to them. Once we develop these skills, we begin to learn the early signs of an unmet emotional need and the ways to manage it effectively.

Almost everyone acts in ways that seem to make sense to them, and to serve their needs and wishes. My approach to anger management is to supply strategies that better enable people to see that excess anger does not make sense, and does not serve their their needs and wishes. Indeed, it usually sabotages their progress to attain their goals. From there, people quite naturally alter their behavior so as to help themselves. It is neither necessary nor desirable for me to attempt to change their behavior, because they will almost always do what makes sense to them.
