I have a passion for working with couples. Having been trained and mentored in the area of couples counseling by a world-renowned expert, I work daily to improve relationships through psychotherapy and education. As a therapist, I draw on a variety of therapeutic approaches grounded in the latest research while also incorporating tried and true assessments to target the areas needing the most attention in the therapeutic process.

Working with couples is the reason I first decided to become a therapist. A majority of my caseload consists of couples. In my approach, I help couples establish or re-establish a connection with each other, and change the environment of their relationship. I don't find it helpful to focus on specific issues that drive fights. Rather, I will help you understand the process working beneath the surface. This process has kept you locked in one dance. The good news is that either one of you can choose to change that dance!

I use many different therapeutic approaches in my work with couples, including my training in the work of Drs. John and Julie Gottman, and the work of Dr. Sue Johnson (Emotionally Focused Couples Counseling). I help couples improve communication, reduce conflict and argument, increase commitment and passion, heal from infidelity and other breaches of trust, and reach better understanding on financial, sexual, child-raising and discipline, and blended family issues.

We are passionate about and skilled with helping couples to repair and strengthen their relationship by utilizing techniques from evidence-based practices such as Emotionally-Focused Couples Therapy and the Gottman Method. These techniques help get to the heart of the matter to increase relationship satisfaction and heal emotional injuries that may have occurred throughout the relationship or as a result of previous trauma. Individual therapy for each partner is also recommended as best practice for helping each person to work through their personal traumas.

Working with couples is extremely specialized and should only be done with a trained clinician. Please ask the right questions to ensure you are in good hands with someone who knows how to guide you. The client is the relationship - not the individuals! So an individual therapist is not the way to go here. At KML, we have a trained PSYPACT psychologist who is licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT), so she can work in any PSYPACT state. This work should focus on what the couple wants for their relationship (sometimes the goal is uncoupling kindly), guiding the couple in healthy growth of the relationship, and all without shame! Jennifer enjoys working with couples to assist them to regain the spark that they had when the relationship was new. She does not take sides on issues but may point out how individual behavior is affecting the relationship. Jennifer encourages open honest communication with each other as well as her in order to strengthen the relationship. She may suggest individual sessions along with the couple's sessions.

As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), I have extensive training and experience helping couples navigate some of the most painful and difficult chapters of their relationships. Often times couples will enter counseling due to issues within their relationship which stems as a result of poor communication skills. Counseling can help couples learn effective ways of communicating with each other and teach boundaries within their relationship. Assessments will be given to learn each couples love language and to determine how they like to be shown affection. Couples will benefit from the use of counseling and will see a difference in their relationship by using the different skills learned in session together.
