So often, depression is a natural response by people who feel overwhelmed by all that is required to engage with and enjoy the world. After 42 years in the field, I have learned that the secret to helping clients get past that overwhelmed feeling requires only two easy steps. First, I listen closely to find out what people's natural strengths, skills, and gifts are. Then I gradually give them very small assignments called "baby steps" that rely on their strengths. Each small change has huge results, and depression soon fades away as each step is achieved.

Depression requires a unique empathic approach, and each individual, couple, or family experiences depression differently. There are times when depression can be associated with a significant transition throughout our life cycle, and at times, it can related to other factors such as sleep, nutrition, and social support. Most of therapy or counseling processes utilize validation, unconditional positive regard, and reframing as common techniques to get someone to heal from their depression.
