Grief and loss are some of the most common reasons individuals seek therapy and the feeling of loss can come from many different sources. Having a child leave for college, for example, is a loss that many parents struggle with. Losing a loved one, through death, divorce or separation is common as well. The sadness and hopelessness you feel can seem overwhelming. Having a listening ear and a caring heart from a professional can make all the difference in helping you through this difficult time. There is no reason to make this difficult journey alone.

Grief is an unwelcome companion at times in our lives. Grief, if properly treated can lead to restorative strength, over time. Time alone will not resolve feelings of grief and loss as that takes understanding friends or a professional counselor. Complicated grief lasts more than six months and may consist of losses over time that were never dealt with. So many people think that the model for grief is the 5 stages of grieving by Kubler-Ross, thought this is a good tool it does not encompass the experience. Many people goes through those states several times a day while in profound grief. There is no linear path in grief. Grieving is a highly personal journey that I can help you with.

Healing from a loss is not linear and may surprise you with twists and turns of emotion that affect all aspects of your life. My approach is to use psychoeducation of self-compassion and the tasks of the grief process. I also incorporate EMDR therapy, mindfulness, narrative therapy, and somatic awareness. More importantly, having a consistent, reliable source of acceptance and empathy may be the soul salve that is needed.
