Most addictions, I have come to believe are what are called traumaddictions. that is, they are rooted in traumas throughout our life, primarily our childhood developmental years. We often have no one to feel safe to find comfort when something "bad" happens, be it an accident by car, word, or deed. Few of us have had childhoods without some form or even pattern of trauma, including being bullied regularly. Addictions often come from these wounds, which is why we call many addictive patterns forms of self medication. Working through and resolving the traumas help immensely in diminishing the addictive patterns.
