The Up in Smoke Classes offered by St. Joseph's Medical Center are offered for free to individuals who are addicted to tobacco and wish to quit. Using a positive behavior change method, the class helps participants learn to recognize their triggers for smoking, understand their cravings and withdrawal symptoms, and devise plans for reducing stress and controlling weight while in the process of quitting. The six-week long class also offers expert advice and peer support to further help people overcome their addiction. For information about this program, contact the St. Joseph medical Center at 410-337-1337.2

Individuals who struggle with an eating disorder can attend a free group offered by the Center for Eating Disorders in order to get the support they need to return to good mental health. A licensed clinician who specializes in the treatment of eating disorders facilitates this recovery-focused group. The group is open to women and men, as well as loved ones who care for them, and meets on a weekly basis year-round. A special group for caregivers meets separately and provides skills trainings and other resources to improve the quality of care given. For further details about these groups, call 410-938-5252.3

SPEAK is a local non-profit organization dedicated to ending suicide in Maryland. The organization works with local police, schools, churches, and hospitals to advocate on behalf of individuals who have taken or attempted to take their own life. Their prevention-based programs have been implemented in Maryland public schools to inform children about the warning signs of suicidal ideation and what they can do to help others in need. Community outreach programs also work to reduce the stigma that surrounds mental illness, so people better understand the underlying reasons associated with suicide.4
