My approach to counseling with children is to work collaboratively with the parents. counseling with children is part of a family systems approach. Children do not develop struggles in a vacuum so working with the parents and the rest of the family as needed is of added benefit to the child in therapy, regardless of the age of the minor child involved. Therapy may be weekly or every other week, as needed and determined when we develop the treatment plan.

On occasion, I do see young children of clients that I counsel. These sessions are usually with the parent or parents present. This is when I have them draw a picture of their house and tell where their room is. If a child is upset about something happening in his/her life, they may act out in anger. Allowing the child or children to express their feelings without penalty is important. However, if it is a deeper problem that cannot be fixed within a few sessions, I refer them to someone who specializes in young children.

Our time together is an opportunity to explore strengths, weaknesses, challenges, and desires. Together, we will work to process aspects of your life that may be causing discomfort, frustration, anxiety, depression, or even simply an overall feeling of being overwhelmed.
