Minneapolis is the largest city in Minnesota, and is situated along the Mississippi River. The city also is connected to St. Paul, the state's capital. Minneapolis-St. Paul is known as the Twin Cities, and has a combined population of around 680,000.1 There are over 20 lakes that are in and around the city; therefore, there is plenty to do with the family out on the water in the summer or winter. The climate in Minneapolis has summers that are warm, but can be hot and humid, with winter being cold and dry. The live theater is very popular, with many different types of theater available. For instance, there is the Theater Latte Da, In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre, Lundstrum Center for the Performing Arts, and the Children's Theatre Company, to name a few. The Minneapolis Institute of Arts was built in 1915, and is the largest art museum in the city with over 100,000 pieces available for viewing. There is something for everyone in the family!

Marriage and Family Mental Health in Minneapolis

Many of today's families face difficulties with mental illness, substance abuse, domestic violence, or a combination thereof. In Hennepin County, it is estimated that over 22,000 adults live with a serious and persistent mental illness (SMPI). The unpredictable, cyclical nature of such illnesses have enormous impact on the individual who must live with the illness, as well as that person's partner, children, and friends. The fact that as many as 50 percent of people who have a SMPI also have a chemical dependency problem only amplifies the difficulties that can arise for couples and families.2

Similar to all areas of mental health, there is a need for qualified professionals to deliver services in the marriage and family therapy field. Minneapolis residents who wish to work with these populations can pursue a master's degree from St. Mary's University of Minnesota. The emphasis on specialized techniques for couples and family counseling prepares graduates for effective work in the field. Graduates are also eligible for licensure with the Minnesota Board of Marriage and Family Therapy. For more information about the program, call 612-238-4570.3

Family Services and Assistance Programs

The Catholic Charities Family Service Center is a provider of many services and programs that seek to help individuals and families in need. Families that do not have a place to live can find safe and secure temporary shelter at the center. Housing assistance and employment training are available for people who seek to improve their life situation. For families with children, the center provides recreational activities, as well as tutoring and other educational support services. Parents can enroll in a parenting class or life skills training course. Questions regarding these services should be directed to 651-647-2300.4
