Kansas City, Missouri is filled with more attractions than one can imagine. If you are a chocolate lover, Chip's Chocolate Factory is a great place for an educational family outing on the makings of fudge and your other favorite treats. Mental Health in Kansas City

Kansas City and the greater Jackson County region, similar to many other areas in the United States, experience a high incidence of substance abuse. Due to its location in the center of the country at the intersection of several major interstates, the presence of illegal substances is high. The National Drug Intelligence Center places Kansas City's use of drugs well above the national average. As such, substance abuse recovery programs and therapists trained in working with addictions are in extremely high demand.2

To address the need for accessible mental health care, the Kansas City's Metropolitan Council of Community Mental Health Centers (MCCMHC) oversees the operation of seven community mental health clinics. With programs designed specifically for low-income families, the centers seek to establish a safety net for those who might not otherwise have access or be able to afford quality behavioral health care. Programs that address a variety of mental health conditions are available for children, adults, and the elderly. Each year, the centers provide services for over 62,000 individuals.3

Current Education

The University of Missouri at Kansas City offers a master's degree program in counseling and guidance that prepares graduates to serve their community's mental health needs. Students can concentrate in one of three areas: couples and family, mental health, or school counseling. The wide variety of classroom and field-based learning experiences at the university's Community Counseling and Assessment Services gives students the knowledge and skills they require in order to effectively work with any population. Further information about the program is available by calling the UMKC School of Education at 816-235-2234.4
