Kansas City is an excellent place to live, with low housing costs, good schools, and many outdoor recreational opportunities. However, similar to many large cities, there is an underlying problem of family and domestic violence. In 2009, over 37,000 domestic violence calls were made in Missouri, a large percentage of which were in Kansas City alone. As a result, nearly 44,000 protective orders were issued by state or local authorities. Fortunately, the state has recognized the severity of these issues that face Missouri families and has implemented programs to address the problem.2
Kansas City families requiring behavioral health care may find solace in the Family Guidance Center. With programs designed specifically for the needs of children, adolescents, couples, and families, the center helps families overcome the obstacles that mental illness and substance abuse present. The philosophy of the center is that any mental illness or addiction is treatable and with the right plan, may be managed effectively. The center works with local school districts to offer services to students in need. The center also operates a 24-hour crisis hotline. Family Services and Assistance Programs
The Catholic Charities of Kansas City-St. Joseph is one of many non-profit organizations that seek to strengthen families through counseling, education, and related services. Catholic Charities works with pregnant women to teach them effective parenting skills. Food and shelter are provided for the homeless, a group that is disproportionately afflicted with mental health disorders. Advocacy and outreach programs seek to reduce the stigma of mental illness in the community. Services for individuals seeking to re-enter the community following serving a prison sentence are also offered. Similar to most charities, donations of goods, money, and time are always appreciated.
