I think of addiction generally as a habit out of control. You can learn to change your habits and thus control your behavior. Of course some addictions are so out of control they require detox and residential treatment. That is not the kind of addictions I deal with. You can be addicted to anything: pornography, alcohol, drugs, sex, or even chocolate.

Addiction is a mental health condition and I treat addiction by a multi-pronged process predominately from a Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) model. I help my clients understand the reasons they use a substance or engage in an addictive behavior, teach them skills regulate their emotions and tolerance distress that might otherwise lead them to engage in their addiction, and address any underlying issues that contribute to their addiction. I also help clients with with concerns about their substance use or compulsive behavior to avoid developing addictions.

Addictions steal people’s lives and break apart families. An addiction can be described as any compulsive and habitual behavior that limits your freedom. This includes alcoholism, substance abuse and dependency, drug abuse, compulsive gambling, pornography and sexual addiction, and others. Addictions have several warning signs, such as increased secrecy, withdrawing from family/friends, fatigue, failure to meet responsibilities, declining health, defensiveness, mood shifts, and demanding more privacy. The addictive cycle is hard to stop, but it can but it can be broken. As professional counselors we can help you break the chains of addiction!

Helping clients to identify what they are seeking from and or getting out of their addiction is one of the main goals in my practice. Once clients are able to identify this they can better understand the motivation behind continuing to use. The next step is to help clients to create a "new life" or version of themselves that allows for more balance and enjoyment.
