I work with married couples, as well as other couples in long-term relationships. In some cases, divorce, or the threat of divorce, is in the air. Sometimes, the same arguments come up over and over again, and never get resolved. Living with another person has many benefits, but it also often means there will be disagreements between the two of you. After all, you are two different people! Couples counseling can work wonders toward resolving some of those issues, while also teaching you how to thrive in spite of the issues that can't be fully resolved.

Couples' therapy aims to help couples recognize conflicts, resolve conflicts, and improve their relationships. Through couples' therapy, you can make thoughtful decisions about rebuilding your relationship or going your separate ways. I am trained in several evidence-based couples' therapy models. I help couples understand underlying issues in their relationship, explore how their past has shaped their present behavior, and gain a better understanding of each other’s emotions.

Couples come to counseling because they are at an impasse--either they argue too much or they have stopped talking altogether. Maybe the intimacy is gone. Reconnecting is possible once the source of the conflict is resolved. We have experience in helping couples to improve communication, recover from infidelity, reconnect sexually, develop solid co-parenting skills, and build intimacy on several levels - not the least of which is the spiritual health of the marriage. There are countless models of healthy romantic relationships, from monogamous to polyamorous, and unique variations between partners. The scripts for dating and longterm relationships of our parents’ generations may not be applicable to your relationship, and there is no formal education in how to be a good partner or how to identify unhealthy relationships. But there is psychological research that shows that effective communication, emotional openness, intimacy, and other factors contribute to healthy relationships. Creating these conditions are skills that can be learned. I practice brief humanistic and emotion-focused therapy (EFT) to help my LGBTQ and hetero clients learn these skills.

Couples counseling is similar to marriage counseling except the two people are not married. Sometimes this is premarital counseling.
