We tend to only think of grief as being associated with death. But allowing yourself to grieve is an important part of healing from any loss. Some of the biggest losses are losses of ideals, beliefs, or what you thought you had. The loss of the belief that you had an honest and open marriage, for example, can be devastating and traumatic. Death of a loved one, Suicide, Overdose, loss of a job, a dream, sobriety,...the list goes on...these and more leave us left with the knowledge that our lives are out of control and can be changed without our consent. These thoughts are often time too much and lead us into behaviors, feelings and negative self talk. Being able to tolerate your grief and loss often takes another person to join us on the journey. Some one who will not judge, shame or condemn us no matter what we say or feel about ourselves. When working with these issues Psychotherapy, Gestalt, Grief, DBT and narrative therapy are the modalities which I use.

Experiencing the death of a loved one or facing another form of loss can make you feel like you are surrounded by darkness and loneliness. But the darkness will subside and your grief can be healed. Whether you are grieving alone or your whole family is grieving, our marriage and family therapists and professional counselors will help you better understand the grieving process, develop coping skills that promote healing, and form supportive relationships with others. Grief and loss is, unfortunately, a normal part of living. There is no single "correct" way to grieve: different cultures and even individuals from the same culture grieve differently. The only consistent feature is that grief takes time. The most effective thing anyone can do for someone grieving is to be there—to listen, to empathize, to walk along with the grief. There is no "fixing" grief. But counseling can help prevent normal grief from developing into major depression or other mental health conditions.
