I am trained as a Prolonged Grief Disorder Therapy (PGDT) provider by the Center for Complicated Grief at Columbia University. The structured protocol addresses "stuck grief" that is marked by an attachment fissure that causes rumination, excessive guilt, loss of former interests and hopelessness 6 months and longer (sometimes many years) after a significant loss. PGDT is evidence-based and has a over a 70 percent efficacy rate for movement into adaptive grief.

If you love, you grieve. Grief is a normal part of life, but too often, we are tempted to rush this experience and get it over with. Melanie believes it is best if grief is acknowledged and dealt with, within a culturally-sensitive approach that's right for you. By working through their feelings of loss, clients can actually grow, and avoid or minimize further complications, such as anger, irritability, tearfulness, distraction, lethargy, self-medicating or other unhealthy coping attempts.

Grief counseling helps people cope with grief and mourning following the loss of a loved one or due to major life changes that trigger feelings of grief (i.e. job loss or divorce). It provides a space for individuals to work through and process the complex emotions surrounding loss. Healthy grieving results in remembering the loss with a newfound sense of peace, rather than searing pain.

There are many challenges associated with grieving the loss of a loved one, whether to death or the loss of a relationship. One challenge is to adjust to the new reality of living without the loved one. There is no "right" way to grieve or process a loss. I help individuals navigate and process the stages of grief. I help individuals work through the four tasks of mourning (accept the reality of the loss, work through the pain of grief, adjust to life without the deceased, and maintain a connection to the deceased while moving on with life.

Edith's approach to grief and loss therapy is to help the client begin a healthy grieving process around their loss, so that they are able to complete the process of grieving and letting go of their lost one. The goal is to resolve the loss and to move on. Clients will be aided and supported as they verbalize and resolve feelings associated with the loss.
