With couples I am active and directive, with a large component that is psycho-educational. Most couples I see have trouble with communication and with conflict resolution and I try to give them tools they can use beginning with the first session.

Helping people set better boundaries, or helping them try something new gives new data that can be freeing and provide new grist for the mill. Step two is finding that if something is helpful in changing one's feelings or perspective, how to repeat it often enough so that it becomes a habit. Many times people come in and are not ready to laugh, but eventually it helps to have a sense of humor so if you do I would really like to work with you.
