Fine is the word I hear most. Fine at work, fine at home, fine when someone asks. Underneath it, usually something that does not switch off.

In the trades, the fitting most likely to crack is the one tightened hardest by somebody who did not trust it to hold. The force is the damage. People work the same way, and the ones holding on hardest are usually the last to feel what it costs.

I came to this work sideways: infantry, then the trades, then nine years in ministry, six at The Mustard Seed Street Church in downtown Victoria. The training came later, because I kept running out of what I knew. Nine years of that will teach anyone the difference between a question and a wound with a question mark on the end.

Sessions are conversations, not performances. Plain language, your pace, and something you can use at four o'clock on a Tuesday when a day is going sideways.
 WHAT PEOPLE BRING
• Anxiety
• Intrusive thoughts and rumination
• Trauma and PTSD
• Stress and burnout
• Grief and loss
• Depression and low mood
• Relationships and connection, worked on individually
• Family-of-origin patterns

• Faith, meaning, and existential questions

Several at once is the usual case, not a complication.
 WHAT THE WORK IS FOR
• Room to feel a hard thing without being run by it
• A clearer sense of what actually matters, and how to live closer to it
• Practical tools for anxiety, intrusive thoughts, and chronic stress
• A way to make sense of patterns that were running long before anyone noticed them

• Faith and clinical work in the same room, where that fits
 WHAT THE WORK MOVES
• Distance. Enough room from a thought that it becomes something to have rather than something to obey.
• A ceasefire. The fight against a feeling usually costs more than the feeling does.
• The body. A nervous system that has been standing watch for a long time does not stand down on instruction. It stands down on evidence, in small repeated doses, until it is convinced. A Chinese proverb: three feet of ice does not freeze in a single day, and does not thaw in one.

None of it undoes anything. What changes is how much room the hard thing takes up in a week.
 HOW I WORK

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is the main one. ACT grew out of CBT, sometimes called third-wave CBT, and it has strong research support for anxiety, depression, trauma and chronic stress. Alongside it, as the work calls for:
 • Mindfulness-based work: noticing what is happening inside without having to act on it
• Narrative therapy: the stories we inherit about who we are, and which parts still hold
• Solution-focused brief therapy: for a specific stuck point, starting from whatever is already working
• Family systems: patterns that started long before the people carrying them

• Pastoral counselling: for anyone who wants faith in the room rather than left at the door
 ON FAITH AND MEANING

If faith matters to you, bring it, and it stays yours. I will not flinch at God, doubt, church hurt, or a prayer that got answered the wrong way round. I take spiritual life seriously and I do not push anyone in a direction. If faith is not part of the picture, none of it comes into the room.
 THE FIRST SESSION

A first session is for working out what is going on and whether this is the right room for it. Nothing is committed beyond the hour. I am not the right counsellor for everybody, and I would rather that got sorted early than in session four.
