 About Me

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional that chose to become a therapist after having worked in the business world for over 20 years. In addition, I served in the U.S. Army for 8 years as a combat medic. I believe that the diversity of experiences gives me unique insight to the daily stresses my clients experience. I've had military and prior military clients tell me that they like seeing me as they don't have to explain everything to me.  I myself have been divorced and remarried with six total children between my wife I. Some people think it's strange that a marriage therapist would have been divorced, but I feel this experience too can be used as a strength as I know personally of the struggles of blending families. I often suggest that a person cannot take another further than they have been.

I interact well with my clients and they appreciate my relaxed persona, however; I do challenge my clients to make changes. I seek to help my clients live intentionally and not to react in an emotionally destructive manner. I deal with "what is" and not with how things "should be." I think we can "should" ourselves to the point of despair, but if we live intentionally by making the best decision we can with the information we have at the time then it is unfair to go back and judge ourselves by what we "should have" known. Part of living in an intentional manner is doing self analysis to identify changes we would like to make and then setting out to make those changes.

Marital Therapy
I focus on emotional intimacy during marriage/couple's therapy as too many times couples get into a negative feedback loop that pushes them further apart. I set about to help couples stop the negative feedback loop and start a positive feedback loop that serves to pull them closer together. I do this by teaching assertive communication skills, structured problem solving skills and loving in an intentional manner.  During family therapy I work to structure the family so that parents are in charge of their children and children are in an appropriate role that allows them to be children.

Trauma/PTSD
Trauma plays a big role in how we interact with each other and understanding the effect trauma has had on how our minds function is key. Some people think that what they went through isn't as traumatic as what others have gone through, so they "shouldn't" have a problem. I say life happens to everyone and your experiences are unique to you. I do trauma work that seeks to build an internal capacity in my clients so that the effect of the trauma decreases over time. This type of therapy can be quite intense, but is necessary for people to be able to put the traumatic event in its proper place so the individual can lead a rich and full life as they define it.

I believe that everyone needs to be responsible for their own mental health and I work to help people achieve balance and wellness. I look forward to working with you.
