As an "easy-to-talk to" registered psychologist with 20+ years of counselling experience, I provide professional services to individuals and couples (18 years of age and older) in St. Albert. I value working in a collaborative and respectful therapeutic relationship and deeply understand the importance of establishing a good rapport or "the right fit" between client and psychologist. I believe that each person and couple is unique, and based on the presenting issue(s) I draw on a variety of counselling modalities to help clients move toward their therapeutic goals and offer the best support.

I incorporate a "down-to-earth", gentle, and holistic approach (i.e., emotion, cognitive, physical, environmental, relationships and spiritual) focused on excellence in client-care to assist in healing, growth, and change. In my counselling practice I offer hope-filled, supportive, and confidential services that integrate current research, knowledge, and the highest level of quality training to best serve clients’ therapeutic needs and goals. In the province of Alberta, all psychologists must have a minimum of a Masters level of education and be registered with a regulatory body such as the College of Alberta Psychologists. Only psychologists who have obtained PhD requirements are able to use the designation "doctor" which entails several more years of education and training. I hold a Masters and PhD specializing in counselling psychology, both awarded by the University of Alberta - it is only one of four such programs in Canada that is accredited with the Canadian Psychological Association and at a Doctoral level, it has the highest standard of training in counselling.

In addition, I am a fully Certified Gottman Therapist, a world-renowned and extensively researched approach to helping couples through significant challenges and to strengthen relationships. My training has also included, advanced certification in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to address issues such as: better quality sleep, anxiety and stress, depression, pain management, self-confidence, enhancing sports and athletic performance, improving study skills, and modification of unwanted habits.
Some of the areas I provide individual counselling are: depression, anxiety/worry/panic, anger, trauma/ptsd, help through life transitions, life/work balance, stress, grief/loss, personal growth and development, and confidence/self-esteem.

Some of the areas I provide couples/marriage counselling are: developing effective communication and learning to better discuss issues; repair from conflict; healing and working through affairs/infidelity/breaches in trust; building better skills as a couple to transition through changes, stresses, and challenges in life; learning to compromise and work through "feeling stuck" on issues; parenting better together; and developing a closer connection/intimacy.

To arrange an appointment you can contact me directly by phone (780-619-0626) or by email at: mvandegriend@stalbertcounselling.com. I am pleased to provide a newly renovated, stress-free office/waiting room that is easily accessed on the north end of St.Albert with plenty of easy parking. Even upon entering the building there is a sense of peace, calm, and privacy - there is a beautiful large atrium when you enter, and I am located on the upper floor. There is no receptionist and often clients prefer this as they can enter/leave the waiting room quietly and privately without having to check-in with anyone. At the time of your appointment, I will meet you in the waiting room and welcome you to my counselling office.
