Life happened. Things changed. The unexpected and unwanted took place. As a result, your marriage has suffered stress fractures. Or, it may be broken. You feel disconnected from your spouse. You feel alone. Now, you and your spouse rarely communicate, if at all.
The stress or brokenness in your marriage may be related to an extramarital affair or experiences one or both of you had before you were married. Perhaps one of you experienced trauma, loss, or is suffering from a chronic health condition.  Or, maybe just the daily grind of work and parenting has depleted your personal reserves and ability to cope.  I want you to know that regardless of what your situation is, or where your marriage relationship is right now, there is hope, change is possible, and help is available.
Much of my work with couples involves the areas of communication, conflict resolution, forgiveness, family of origin issues, and trust building.  Although all of these areas are important, I believe that the foundation of a strong relationship are strong communication skills.  I have discovered that often spouses have been talking at one another, but not often having meaningful, productive exchanges that lead to having their needs as an individual and couple met.
I also work with individuals (older children, teens, and adults) who are experiencing conditions such as depression, anxiety, and grief and/or have experienced trauma.   I am particular interested in working with individuals who are struggling to deal with trauma/PTSD.  I have worked with clients who have experienced domestic violence, rape, and childhood sexual abuse.  To be able to better help clients who have experienced such trauma, I obtained training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy.  Much of my work with older children and teens has been within the context of adjusting to their parents' divorce and/or remarriage.
At times potential clients are interested in the therapeutic approach I use.  My response is that I use what works.  There are hundreds of published theories and therapeutic approaches that a clinician can study.  However, there is only one you.  My goal as a therapist is to appreciate your uniqueness and to utilize an approach that will work for you and that will give you the room to grow and discover your way forward.  After all, your therapy is not about the therapeutic technique, but rather you and your experience/perception of therapy.
If you are still curious with regard to the theoretical approaches I tend to borrow from, those approaches are:  person centered therapy, existential therapy, reality therapy, cognitive behavior therapy, and EMDR.  Translated, this essentially means that (a) I do a ton of listening,(b) I help clients to explore themes of meaning and purpose, (c) I help clients to explore what they truly want, (c) I stress using the powerful God given gift of choice, and (d) I teach my clients to identify and challenge cognitive distortions/irrational thoughts and to replace them with more rational/balanced thinking.
As I mentioned earlier, I am an EMDR trained therapist.  This approach was developed by Francine Shapiro and is very effective for many people who have experienced trauma.  I obtained training in this approach because I wanted to be able to help my clients who had experienced significant trauma such as domestic violence, rape, and childhood sexual abuse.  I have personally experienced the effectiveness of this approach in my work with individual clients.  If you have experienced trauma/PTSD this approach could be a good fit for you.
