Families work best when everyone functions in his and her proper role. This means that parents need to be in charge, children need to know what is expected of them and to be given increasing freedom as they move through adolescence, and grandparents need to be "honored" in an advisory (only) role. When grandparents meddle or disempower parents or when children are in charge, problems arise.

Sometimes a child or one family member is brought in for treatment of an issue that may actually have more to do with interactions between family members than a problem specific to this identified client. The psychologists at Lepage Associates believe that some of the issues that come up for children are due to interaction styles between family members and that a holistic, family therapy approach is the most effective treatment.
