We know that healing occurs in the family and that when you only work with one part of the family it is hard to create lasting change. One of the keys is to get everyone on board speaking the same language and communicating in ways that support each other and build on the strengths that are already existing in the family unit opposed to one person being the "problem".

When one person is experiencing stress, it affects the entire family system. Family relationships are an important part of your emotional and psychological health and development. Even when the issues is an "individual problem," often times involving the family can facilitate the healing and lead to life long change and development. Rather than power and control, I focus on communication and emotional attachment.

Families with teens may experience difficulties such as rebelliousness, blended families, divorce, adoption, bullying and self-injurious behavior such as cutting. I help teens learn to deal with the challenges of transitioning from childhood to adulthood. I help parents learn new skills needed to cope with a teenager. I help families learn how to communicate their wants and needs effectively, without fighting or hurting each other. The teenage years can be a challenge but the skills to navigate through those years can be learned!

Dr. Keller utilizes family therapy when appropriate. In working with children and teens, dysfunctional family dynamics are a major contributing factor in the development of symptoms of anxiety, depression,substance abuse, and academic underachievment. Improving empathic communication within the family system can play an important role in the treatment of a variety of psychological conditions. Dr. Keller attemts to utilize the family as a support system to help patients recover from emotionally painfull experiences. Family therapy is often used as an adjunct to individual therapy. Dr. Keller may refer to another therapist for family therapy while he is treating an individual patient.

At the Mandel Center of AZ, Alyssa Mandel, LCSW approaches Family Therapy from a strengths-based perspective. Rather then focusing on all of the negative aspects of what is occurring in the family, we work on identifying and expanding the positive components in the family. We are always non-judgmental, fair and balanced in our work with the complex nature of Family Therapy. Our goal with families is to help every person involved feel as though they are valued and honored regardless of what issues they may be facing. And, assist the family in supporting each other by teaching them positive coping skills.

I assist families who are in need of repair as a result of substance use/addiction. I work with such families to identify and help with coping strategies related to co-dependency, relapse, betrayal, cravings, stress management, relationship repair and other aspects. Many family members want to be supportive but don't know how to proceed. As a former Clinical Director of a substance abuse treatment facility and primary therapist in outpatient, inpatient and residential settings, I respect and am able to address the concerns of family members and addicted individuals, respectively. I am also a certified progressive recovery coach eager to help those in active recovery.

The transition between junior high and high school, along with high school to college, are stressful times for teens due to the change in their identity. During adolescence, teens are working on creating their identity and feeling comfortable in their world. This can cause chaos and confusion for the teen. Therapy With Heart is here to help increase communication within the family, help your teenager manage stress and overwhelm, and ensure that he/she is creating a positive sense of self and identity.

There are many reasons why families reach out for help such as conflicts stemming from unresolved issues and problems with communication. In working with families, I help to create healthy boundaries, identify their hurts and model healthy ways of communicating with one another. I use a family systems approach and work to address the family as a whole so that the "identified patient" or family "scapegoat" is seen as manifesting the issues of the greater system.
