There are times when demands on the family system cause wear and tear on the system which can contribute to a dysfunctional home environment. Family counseling can be beneficial in helping a family learn skills and strategies to rebuild and improve relationships. The therapeutic process can help family members gain an understanding of how the household functions and may focus on identification of roles within the family with the overall goals being identification of strengths, improved communication, and increased empathy and emotional support, which will create more effective family management.

That "One Big Happy Family" feeling is often fleeting, as it tends to be affected by the constantly changing demands placed on each family member. Sometimes family reactions aren't directly affected by painful or chaotic life events, but are conflicts or power struggles that may have existed from childhood. If disagreements and emotional/irrational behaviors have become the norm in your household, it may be time to enlist my help. As a skilled therapist & objective professional, I can help you & your family hash out your issues in a structured, safe environment. Furthermore, I can assist you in decreasing resentment & distrust, while helping you improve insight & communication w/ one another

I have so much fun working with families that are in trouble. There is nothing better than to have a family in my office that is in total disarray at the start of therapy with me only to be communicating, united, and stronger than ever after working through their therapy. Families should support one another unconditionally, communicate without fear or malice, be on the same team, and learn how to make family decisions. I teach these skills and more.

Family life can be both deeply enjoyable & extremely painful...differing opinions, single parenting, the stresses of finances, parenting issues, adolescent rough spots, working through the painful process and recovery in divorce, differing lifestyles, career challenges, workaholism, overwhelming commitments, drug abuse, boomeranging children in a down economy-have great impact on family life. Some walk on egg shells while others show explosive emotions-or both. Whatever the situation, my clients experience a safe environment where everyone is given respect for their point of view. Gaining skills & workable way that at minimum everyone can “live with” & potentially heal & thrive is my focus

In family therapy, the family itself is the client. That's because each individual member is as important as the rest in forming the family and each one is playing a key part in the family's situation. Members of a family share an emotional history and sometimes this history (or the past) gets carried into the present, often to an extent that causes unhappiness or misunderstanding. Communication is another key factor. Often, just pointing out and clearing up communication patterns can of itself allow much healing (as well as prevention of future unnecessary conflicts).

Residential Addiction Program
Olympia, Punta Gorda, Florida 33950 | 941-882-1664
When a family member is struggling with alcohol or drug addiction, the entire family is affected negatively. Communication barriers within families of addicts may cause the addict to withdraw into isolation, leaving their family members feeling frustrated, ashamed, lonely, fearful, depressed, hopeless and angry. The sources of addiction are mental, emotional and psychological in nature, and the addict, as well as their family, need to heal under the care of professionals. At Valiant Recovery, we offer counseling to the families of addicts to help them process the difficult emotions they have confronted, and to create a healthy, supportive environment for the addict to return home to.

Most family therapists inadvertently create more chaos through their well-intentioned efforts to assist a family move through a change process. Why? Brains are inherently deregulated (all of us, may I add) and most talking and dialoguing misses brain-centric problems that need more intensive help. Many times the emotional trauma created by years of solving problems ineffectively can wreak havoc on the brain's parasympathetic nervous system, not ever giving the family a break from flight or fight thinking.
