Addiction is problem of the brain itself, as much as it is a problem of the mind. Once one crosses the threshold from bad habit to addiction, the urge to satisfy that addiction often overtakes and supersedes all other concerns of the individual. My approach to treating addiction includes helping the individual work through the underlying problems that led to the addiction as well as teaching the individual how to manage and ultimately overcome the addictive behaviors.

Ashburn Psychological Services has therapists and doctors available to assist in your recovery from addiction. Addiction to alcohol, substances, sex and pornography, gambling, computers and media and foods are some of the areas that can be addressed in treatment. A bio-psycho-social model to addiction treatment is widely seen as being a successful approach. With this approach, a client's addiction is understood and treated in the context of his or her biology, psychology and social reality. At times, cognitive-behavior therapy and other counseling approaches are enough to bring about change and improvements, while at other times, medication may be warranted. We are here to help.

There is a spectrum of substance use. Not all use is addiction. It doesn't always end in "jail, institutions, or death." Our goal is to help you figure out how drugs or alcohol have impacted you and your life. Then we will individualize a treatment plan for you. This may include a combination of individual, family, or group therapy and drug/alcohol testing. It may even include a program of harm reduction called alcohol moderation. Mutual support groups do not work for everyone so we do not require them. Don't let a bad experience with a rigid program stop you from getting help.

I work with overspending and sexual addiction. Both of these are what are called "process addictions." With spending without much forethought and with sexual behavior regardless of consequences, lives are out of control. With both of these impulse disorders, I recommend 12 step groups as well as individual therapy with me. The groups help the person see their problems as they hear other people's stories and they also give hope and "sponsors." Our treatment helps them find out what needs they are really trying to meet and get in touch with their real feelings rather than "doping"with overspending or with sexually acting out. Note: I do not treat alcoholism or drug addiction.

Recovering from addiction requires support, commitment, motivation and time. Committing to sobriety involves changes in how you think about yourself, and how you deal with stress and relationships. I believe treatment should address your specific needs and focus on more than the addiction. Success also depends on addressing the reasons for the addiction. I use a comprehensive and holistic approach that also helps you: enhance your motivation to participate in treatment; develop strategies for coping with cravings; learn skills to avoid and prevent relapse; learn to develop a healthier life-style; and address other health problems such as depression or anxiety. I also provide and recommend additional services such as support groups and group therapy,...(view profile to read more)

While most treatment approaches to addiction include 12 step programs, rehabs, and now sober living houses, Grey Matters International, Inc. provides a wildly successful alternative to traditional models of addiction treatment----that keeps the brain in mind. That is, talking to the conscious brain while the primal brain is deciding things even before you are consciously aware? Well, that is the problem to solve in addiction. We have the solution utilizing a new cutting edge neuroscience-centered brain rebalancing system. Contact kevin@kevinflemingphd.com or call 877-606-6161.

Many men are addicted to pornography. They can spend hours a day viewing imagines on computers. They may also have affairs that are causing havoc in their lives. I have worked with Everymans Battle workshops as a group counselor. I also facilitate several men's groups where men meet and help each other grow in their understanding of who God says the are. The start of the journey to healing starts with a call to someone. You don't have to be bound by this affliction-contact someone-reach out for help..

For clients facing Process Addictions, I approach clients from person-centered, existential, and cognitive behavioral therapy perspectives. I view process addictions as having their origins in multiple areas to include behavioral addiction, emotional triggers, low self-concept, shame, and low stress tolerance. I will work with you on the physical, cognitive, emotional, and spiritual fronts and educate you on the cycle of addiction and shame. In addition to working through the underlying shame, unfinished business, unfinished grief, low self-concept, and low stress tolerance, I would support you to employ CBT tools and developing more life purpose and resilience to prevent relapse.

I work with many clients who are successfully in recovery from an addiction and are now faced with fully feeling and experiencing life and their emotions without using the particular substance to numb that they used in the past. I believe that addictions of all kinds often arise out of a need to numb when what we are feeling or experiencing is too painful, uncomfortable or overwhelming. Once no longer using the substance, clients often work with me to more deeply explore what it is that is too overwhelming to feel, how that can changed, resolved, relieved and healed, and also how to practice self care and be able to tolerate these emotions in other ways.

At Counseling Solutions, LLC, I treat substance abuse utilizing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and 12-Step Principles. Individuals who are experiencing life problems due to their alcohol or drug use are appropriate for these types of outpatient, weekly therapy. The substance use may be impairing relationships, job performance, health, or a general sense of well-being. For those who require detoxification due to withdrawal symptoms, it is essential that a period of closely monitored inpatient treatment and/or a period of residential treatment be completed prior to outpatient therapy

Addiction is a mental health condition and I treat addiction by a multi-pronged process predominately from a Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) model. I help my clients understand the reasons they use a substance or engage in an addictive behavior, teach them skills regulate their emotions and tolerance distress that might otherwise lead them to engage in their addiction, and address any underlying issues that contribute to their addiction. I also help clients with with concerns about their substance use or compulsive behavior to avoid developing addictions.
