I consult with families who have a loved one with an eating disorder. Families are in the dark when it comes to knowing how to handle the day-to-day functioning with their family member, how to help, where to go for appropriate expert treatment and how to approach their loved one with their concerns. Often families use their natural instincts to help and find they are making the problems worse. Sometimes husbands or wives need help addressing their worries to their mates as well. This is very tricky, but can be facilitated with help. I offer support, information, specific guidelines and resources for families who hire me in this type of scary situation.

Family therapy is a specialty area of mine, one that I have been working in for over ten years. This could be work with parents and their children, helping to create more stable and functional home dynamics. Work with siblings in order to strengthen their relationships and adjust behaviors within the family unit. Or work with parents and their adult children, helping the family heal past hurts. No matter if the family is biological, adoptive, or blended, I can guide the family system to a more balanced and happier state. I give my families tools to help them navigate dynamics now, and into the future, ensuring the family continues to strengthen and grow.

Sometimes a child or one family member is brought in for treatment of an issue that may actually have more to do with interactions between family members than a problem specific to this identified client. The psychologists at Lepage Associates believe that some of the issues that come up for children are due to interaction styles between family members and that a holistic, family therapy approach is the most effective treatment. Our psychologists approach family work with an awareness of each family member needs while also respecting parenting styles and cultural differences in childrearing. We find that the families we work with report stronger parent-child relationships, less conflict in the ho....

Humans are relational beings, and the family is central to most of our worlds. For that reason, I use an attachment-based treatment approach to family therapy. This helps clients to understand themselves in relation to others, as well as move toward, and encourage in loved ones, a secure attachment. It is healthy attachment relationships that influence family functioning, improve a sense of well-being, and reduce conflict. Family trauma can also be addressed in this context by incorporating Mindfulness, consciousness, behavioral, and cognitive techniques.

We choose friends, but are unable to choose or change our families. Families may be among some of the more difficult relationships to navigate. Greater satisfaction in even our most difficult relationships can be experienced when we learn how to communicate more effectively. My approach to relationships is centered on working with the individual to improve communication skills through social learning and practice. We will use various techniques such as mindfulness exercises, empty chair and role playing to model and practice communication skills. The results are improved abilities to assert one's needs, regulate and express one's emotions, and experience deeper connections with others.
