There is a time and a place for each person to work on himself/herself individually. However, we are rarely alone. Many of us live within a family system. As in all systems, there are strengths and there are challenges. We will use the strengths to create solutions to the issues. First by indentification, then by understanding. We will work with respect and compassion that is reflected in the communication and coping skills of the family.

Each family has a history of the rules that govern interaction within a family. These rules may be known to at least some degree but may not be spoken about. Rules include what are the consequences that occur if those rules are broken. Rules are often passed down from one generation to the next and conflict can occur when two people come together in forming their own family. A conflict can also occur in a blended family because of remarriage or the formation of new family unit. Therapy involves understanding how those rules came about and then addressing how those rules work or do not work within the current family unit and making decisions about how to better interact together.

Most family therapists inadvertently create more chaos through their well-intentioned efforts to assist a family move through a change process. Why? Brains are inherently dysregulated (all of us, may I add) and most talking and dialoguing misses brain-centric problems that need more intensive help. I will work with families that find themselves in a dynamic they are unable to change on their own. I will teach them how family systems work and guide them through the process of reconciliation and redemption. This may be a combination of individual, couples or group sessions. My background in mediation also equips me to facilitate group discussion and foster an environment of trust.
