When we think of addictions we usually think of alcohol or drugs. There are numerous other experiences which we can be addicted to. An underlying compulsion is evident and present in all forms of addictions. Dr. Jefrey Schwartz, at the University Of California School of Medicine, has worked very successfully with obsessive compulsive disorder patients, through the use of Mindfulness Training Cognitive Therapy. Brain MRI's are used as measurable outcomes of treatment. This method has been found effective for many other compulsions including addictions. I have incorporated Dr. Schwartz' method into my treatment and is now available to you. Call me for an appointment.

Addiction is a mental health condition and I treat addiction by a multi-pronged process predominately from a Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) model. I help my clients understand the reasons they use a substance or engage in an addictive behavior, teach them skills regulate their emotions and tolerance distress that might otherwise lead them to engage in their addiction, and address any underlying issues that contribute to their addiction. Escapism looks like a lot of things and can have a big impact on our lives. It can be overworking, procrastination, excessive drinking, drug use, and compulsive sexual behaviors. We work with high-functioning and high-achieving clients that struggle to cope with the rigorous demands of their life. Your struggles may go unnoticed because you are an achiever and are skilled at hiding them, but you recognize the negative impact they’ve had on your life and relationships.
