Named to honor a poet, editor, and writer in the Quaker community that settled there,1 the City of Whittier is located 12 miles southeast of Los Angeles, and is one of the Gateway Cities in southeastern Los Angeles County. With a population over 85,000, Whittier has attracted young families with its combination of recent community revitalization projects, proximity to Los Angeles, and emphasis on family fun, with amusement park Adventure City, miniature golf course and arcade Golfland, and the Huntington Library Art Collections and Botanical Gardens all close by.

Mental Health in Whittier

With a comparatively low rate of serious adult mental illness -- 4% of the population -- and 19.2 psychiatrists available per 100,000 people,2 mental health care in Whittier has a strong history of availability. Whittier's young demographics make it the home of several parent- and child-focused resources for mental health care. The Whole Child, formerly the Intercommunity Child Guidance Centre, focuses on "services without walls",3 coordinating social service agencies, housing, schools, and homes to provide a consistent approach to mental health care for children under 18. Their main office can be contacted at (562) 692-0383.

Other agencies, such as SPIRITT Family Services, provide a community-based, family-centred model of care that emphasizes proactive prevention and intervention as well as treatment and recovery. Serving primarily the Latino population4 - but available to residents of all backgrounds - they can be reached toll-free at 855.714.8800 in English or Spanish.

Current Education

As well as the clinical internships and training provided at agencies such as The Whole Child, Whittier is home to Whittier College, whose psychology department offers undergraduate degrees, an international study-abroad psychology program, and internships in the community with both non-profit organizations and at Whittier's own student counseling center.5
